Dell Studio 17 Battery Life Test

Jared asked me for more information on the dell battery on my new Dell Studio 17. Being the OCD Rain-man that I am, I decided to conduct some testing and document the result here for your reading pleasure.

So to begin, I found out from Dell that the Studio 17 has the 9 cell studio 17 battery (instead of the 6cell dell studio 17 battery ) which means it’s the most you can have on this model. Next, I selected the “Dell Recommended” power setting as shown below:

This is basically a middle of the road setting to give you average dell laptop battery life and average performance. This seems to be a good compromise between battery life and performance.

Next, I enabled the “Dell Extended Battery Life” in the Battery Meter. I’m not 100% sure of everything that this does but it only applies when you are running on battery and it changes the color scheme to “Windows Vista Basic,” which may not work with all your programs. It also turns off the Windows Sidebar (which I guess uses up battery power).

Instead of conducting this test with a fully powered dell studio 17 battery, I decided to try to simulate what I would normally do in real life. After max-charging it on Friday night, I let it sit over the weekend without using it. On Monday, when I turned it on with battery power, it was down to 91% battery charge level. I figure this is probably the longest you would go without turning on your laptop after a charge.

During the testing period, I backed up approximately 300 files over WiFi to my Buffalo NAS, copied files to my desktop via WiFi and did other light processing, including using the browser. What I specifically did NOT do was use the DVD drive at all. So if you plan on watching a DVD movie, this power test probably will not apply to you. If you are going to be using it to create and edit Word files, email, and browse the Internet, this power test should be almost exactly what you will get.

The table below shows the battery level (from the Battery Meter) as time progressed (shown in hours and minutes).

Time (HH:MM) Battery Level in %
0:00 91%
0:55 75%
1:58 50%
2:45 25%
3:03 15%
3:14 7%
3:16 5%

As you can see from the table, near the end, the battery level goes down fairly quickly. From 15% to 7%, it only took 11 minutes, then down to 5% in just 2 more minutes. At this point, the system turned off automatically.

Once again, keep in mind that this test started from 91%, which was where the level was after not using the computer for 2 days. If it was charged right before use to 100%, and you set the power setting to “Power saver,” I’m sure you would get a lot more time from the battery. But I don’t think those results are useful when you are using the computer in real-life situations. I like longer battery life, but I hate slow computers.

My results show that with moderate use and with the screen on for the entire time of testing, and connected via WiFi, you can get about 3 hours of studio 17 battery life, even if you start with a slightly less than full chage. In my book, that’s a pretty good length of time.

Dell Studio 15 Review

Design
The Studio 15 takes its design essence from 13.3 inch XPS M1330 (dell xps m1330 battery) and the 15.4 inch XPS M1530 (dell xps m1530 battery) like the wedge shaped profile, drop hinge,slot-loading optical drive and touch sensitive media buttons. The notebook feels a bit heavy compared to other laptops in its category and design look a bit thicker too. Clearly this is not a thin-and light laptop designed for mobility rather one that can be used as a desktop replacement. The overall construction of the Studio 15 ( replacement battery for dell studio 15) is quite solid and it should survive a little drop offs without significant damage.
The matte finish of the laptop gives a smooth rubber-like feel. The metal palmrest of the XPS M1530 is replaced by a nice design in Studio 15.

Processor, RAM and HDD
The standard system comes with a 2 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processor with 3 GB RAM and 250 GB HDD. The overall performance is nothing to complain about but it is certainly not the fastest one available in the market. There were no problem watching a movie from its Slot Loading DVD Drive while downloading video clips and encoding a video in background. Running Photoshop CS3 at the time of video encoding was no problem either.

Screen and Graphics
The standard display unit has a 1280X800 XGA resolution but you can opt for 1440X900 or 1920X1200 resolution if you want to see more content within the screen. The horizontal viewing angle is great for watching a movie with a couple of your friends and the vertical viewing angle is also standard. The graphics option was disappointing. The standard system comes with a Intel X3100 graphics which is only enough for movie watching. The optional dedicated ATI Radeon HD 3450 is also underpowered to deliver good gaming experience. We would like more dedicated grpahics options.

Keyboard
The keyboard feels quite good with natural click sound while typing. The key travel is pleasurable and key size and spacing is also standard. There is also option for backlit keyboard which is nice to type on darker environments.

TouchPad and Touch Sensitive Media Control Buttons
The touchpad response is excellent and moving fingers over the glossy textured surface gives a nice feeling. The dedicated scroll areas are also useful to scroll through large webpages. The buttons are quiet and have good travel.
The media buttons are touch sensitive with white backlights that stays lit for a fraction of a second after being touched which gives the response of a key press.

Ports
There are more than enough ports for normal usage. On the left side there are two USB, an HDMI, a VGA, WiFi on/off, Ethernet, microphone jack, two headphone jack, an Express Card Slot, a 8 in 1 memory card reader. On the right side there are two more USB ports, slot loading optical drive, a power jack and the power button. There are no ports at the back but an IR port for the remote control sits at the front.

Audio
Th speakers are located at the top of the keyboard above the media buttons. The sound quality is very good with loud and clear voice without any distortion. The only thing that lacks is the presence of subwoofer for distinct bass effects. A good pair of headphone or a dedicated set speakers are necessary to please the audiophiles.

Heat and Noise
The system’s heat management is quite good and it does not get intolerably heated even when the laptop is put to high stresses. The fan moves a good amount of hot air but remains silent most of the times.

Dell Studio 15 Battery Life
The laptop comes with a standard 6 cell Lithium Ion dell studio 15 battery which is able to run the laptop for four hours in normal usage and at least three hours on high workload. There is also a 9 cell studio 15 battery option which is expected to run the machine for six hours. The battery life is pretty impressive for laptop of this category.

Price
The standard model is available at $799 which means the system comes at a good bargain price.

Pros
•Striking design
•Good dell battery life
•Good build quality
•Lots of customization options
•Nice keyboard, touchpad and media buttons
•Good value for money spent
•Multiple upgrades and repairing will be easy
Cons
•Only one available graphics card
•Intel graphics is not good for HDMI viewing
•Access cover at bottom opens up everything
•Bulkier than some laptops
•Upgrades are pricey

Conclusion
Overall, the Studio 15 is a solid performer at a budget price. It lacks the option for a good graphics and its size and weight is uneasy to carry around but the attractive pricing and good build quality makes it a good choice. Though far from being called a multimedia powerhouse, this laptop is an excellent laptop for average use.

Select Correct HP 510 AC Adapter, HP 510 Battery Charger

How to Select the correct HP 510 AC Adapter
Before purchasing HP 510 AC Adapter you need to make sure make the 510 Adapters will give you the correct voltage, suitable current output and the right "tips". Most laptop users travel, for tdose travel to Australia, Europe or US they require AC adapters that take 100-240 voltage input and output 16 voltage or 19 voltage.

You should Follow 2 easy steps to pick the right hp laptop AC adapters.

1. Finding the right "output voltage" and "current output"
To find out the voltage & current, turn your laptop over and look for a label, sticker or writing which shows the voltage and current. You can also find these shown on your original HP AC Adapter 510 if you have it.

voltage [volts V]- it has to be the same as voltage value specified on your laptop.Different laptops were designed to consume power varied by equipments such as CD-Rom, LCD size, CPU maker and CPU speed. You require to use the "matching voltage" . Only use the HP 510 Charger output the matching voltage of your laptops. You can easily locate your laptop voltage. Mostly, voltage is printed on your laptops. You also can check your laptop manual.

Current output[ampere A] -it has to be the same or higher than the value specified on your laptop. The Amps may be higher but they cannot by lower. If you are purchasing a universal 510 AC Adapter or HP 510 Car Charger you will need to work out the Watts of your original HP 510 Power Supply and select the universal HP 510 Adapter or Car Charger with the same Watts or next highest Wattage. You can work out the Wattage by multiplying the Voltage by the Amps i.e 16V X 4A = 64 Watts. There is no 64 Watt HP 510 AC Adapter so you will need to select the next step up which is the 70 Watt or higher Watt HP 510 Power Adapter.(NOTE: If the wattage requirement for your laptop is lower than the 64W of the adapter, it will not damage your laptop, your laptop will only take the amount of power it requires. I.E. If your laptop needs 50W, then either the 60W or 90W will work OK. If your laptop needs 80W then you will need the 90W one as the 75W one will not be powerful enough.)

2. Finding the right "tips"
Different laptops have different connectors. You need the right tip for your laptop. This is very simply to find. Basically, laptop AC adapters comprise of 2 ends. One end is male power outlet. You use this end to plug into wall power outlet. The other end is called "TIP" which you will plug this tip into the "DC IN" in your laptop.
Your laptop won't work on the wrong tip. You can only use the " matching Tips"
Warning : DO NOT try to force it in.
