Acer Aspire One D250 Review & Aspire One D250 Battery
Design
Let’s be honest: The D250 isn’t exactly the flashiest of netbooks. The sleek lines and brushed aluminum palm rest certainly add a touch of class, but it’s not the sort of machine that’s going to turn a lot of heads. (Except, perhaps, to gawk at the multitude of fingerprints adorning the lid. Why anyone continues to make portable devices with glossy coatings is totally beyond me.)
But head-turner or no, in terms of function it’s exceptionally well put together.
Two USB ports adorn the right edge, along with the power jack, locking mechanism, and memory card slot. The left side gets another USB port — a very sensible design choice — as well as headphone and mic connectors, VGA out, and an Ethernet jack. That lineup may not be earth-shaking, but it’s a generous selection of I/O options given the extremely limited real estate; the space on the sides is barely half an inch thick — thin enough that it has to bell out very slightly to accommodate the VGA connector.
But this is why I got this machine, you know: It’s just ridiculously thin and light. The official measurements are as follows: 10.2″ (258.5mm) W x 7.2″ (184.0mm) D x 1.0” (25.4) H, with a weight of 2.8 lbs. (1.27 kg) with my six-cell battery. (Acer claims the three-cell version is 2.4 lbs., or 1.1 kg.) Now, as I showed in my initial impressions, that thickness measurement is slightly misleading: Thanks to the bulk and angle of the battery, the 6-cell version actually breaks 1.25″ at the hinge, albeit barely. It’s hard to complain too much about that extra quarter-inch, but if thickness is absolutely paramount for you, you should know you may need to pop off the battery to get it to its thinnest form.
Battery
I’ve saved the best for last. Let’s talk about acer aspire one d250 battery life.
It’s ridiculous.
I mean, ridiculous. I knew when I picked up the 6-cell model that I could expect solid aspire one battery life, but I had no idea how solid. Here’s how I used this machine in a real-world scenario: I’d check e-mail in the morning, then hibernate the machine and disconnect from power. For the next eight hours, I’d pull it out and wake it up for about half an hour at a stretch every two hours or so, leaving the screen set as dim as possible (which as I say is still quite bright) and WiFi off, where I’d use it to take notes during demos and press conferences. At at least one point during the day, for one to two hours, I’d turn on WiFi and check e-mail, go online to research some facts for my previews, and turn those notes into full write-ups.
So on average the machine would get about two to two and a half hours of very light-power-consumption use, and then another one to two hours of heavy WiFi and web access. And yet, there wasn’t a single day when the power meter reported less than 60 percent power remaining by the end of the day.
It’s hard to appreciate how useful this is until you realize that without the fear of a acer aspire one battery going out on you you can take all your notes via typing rather than longhand. Let’s be honest: The D250 isn’t exactly the flashiest of netbooks. The sleek lines and brushed aluminum palm rest certainly add a touch of class, but it’s not the sort of machine that’s going to turn a lot of heads. (Except, perhaps, to gawk at the multitude of fingerprints adorning the lid. Why anyone continues to make portable devices with glossy coatings is totally beyond me.)
But head-turner or no, in terms of function it’s exceptionally well put together.
Two USB ports adorn the right edge, along with the power jack, locking mechanism, and memory card slot. The left side gets another USB port — a very sensible design choice — as well as headphone and mic connectors, VGA out, and an Ethernet jack. That lineup may not be earth-shaking, but it’s a generous selection of I/O options given the extremely limited real estate; the space on the sides is barely half an inch thick — thin enough that it has to bell out very slightly to accommodate the VGA connector.
But this is why I got this machine, you know: It’s just ridiculously thin and light. The official measurements are as follows: 10.2″ (258.5mm) W x 7.2″ (184.0mm) D x 1.0” (25.4) H, with a weight of 2.8 lbs. (1.27 kg) with my six-cell battery. (Acer claims the three-cell version is 2.4 lbs., or 1.1 kg.) Now, as I showed in my initial impressions, that thickness measurement is slightly misleading: Thanks to the bulk and angle of the battery, the 6-cell version actually breaks 1.25″ at the hinge, albeit barely. It’s hard to complain too much about that extra quarter-inch, but if thickness is absolutely paramount for you, you should know you may need to pop off the battery to get it to its thinnest form.

I’ve saved the best for last. Let’s talk about acer aspire one d250 battery life.
It’s ridiculous.
I mean, ridiculous. I knew when I picked up the 6-cell model that I could expect solid aspire one battery life, but I had no idea how solid. Here’s how I used this machine in a real-world scenario: I’d check e-mail in the morning, then hibernate the machine and disconnect from power. For the next eight hours, I’d pull it out and wake it up for about half an hour at a stretch every two hours or so, leaving the screen set as dim as possible (which as I say is still quite bright) and WiFi off, where I’d use it to take notes during demos and press conferences. At at least one point during the day, for one to two hours, I’d turn on WiFi and check e-mail, go online to research some facts for my previews, and turn those notes into full write-ups.
So on average the machine would get about two to two and a half hours of very light-power-consumption use, and then another one to two hours of heavy WiFi and web access. And yet, there wasn’t a single day when the power meter reported less than 60 percent power remaining by the end of the day.
It’s hard to appreciate how useful this is until you realize that without the fear of a acer aspire one battery going out on you you can take all your notes via typing rather than longhand. There’s a very, very large difference between hoping you’ll have enough acer aspire one d250 battery life to get you through your day, and having no doubt whatsoever that you will.

Having Problems with your HP Pavilion dv6000, dv9000 or Presario v6000 series Notebook?
HP announced that there may be hardware issues with some (not all) with their HP Pavilion dv6000 and dv9000, and their Compaq v6000 series notebooks. The symptoms that may occur are these:
The notebook does not detect wireless networks and the wireless adapter is not detected in the Device Manager.
The notebook has no power and no active LEDs.
The notebook does not start.
The battery charge indicator light does not turn on when the battery ( such as hp dv6000 battery, hp dv9000 battery ) is installed and the AC adapter is connected.
The notebook issues a single beep during boot indicating no power.
There is no video on the computer LCD panel or external monitor.
The external monitor functions but there is no image on the notebook LCD panel.
If your Notebook is affected by any of these issues, and qualifies, HP will fix it for free (including shipping charges to and from them). If your warranty is over, they’ll still fix it if it’s within 1 year of the end of your warranty, they’ll also give you a 90-day warranty on the repair. If you warranty is still in effect, it will remain unchanged.
Full details, instructions for checking your BIOS version and updating it (if needed) and an FAQ can be found here. Please note, that this problem does not affect all notebooks within the model and serial number range.
I think it’s pretty cool of HP to fix affected notebooks even if they’re out of warranty.
There’s also a critical BIOS update that you should do (regardless of if your notebook is affected by these problems or not). Also, before sending your notebook into HP, be sure to backup all your data, as they’ll probably reset your laptop to the factory state (ie. all your data and programs gone, Vista fresh, and bloated with bloat-ware).
This actually happened to my sister’s laptop (Compaq Presario v6317ca), on either Friday or Saturday last week, the Wireless Adaptor stopped working. Windows could not find any networks, and the Wireless Adaptor was not showing up in the Device Manager. So, I tried reinstalling the Device Driver
, but that didn’t fix it. So, I tried updating the BIOS to the latest version, and that failed to work too. I even opened up the HP Wireless Assistant, and even that didn’t see the Adaptor. I had determined that the Wireless Adaptor was not working because of hardware problems. So, I shot an email to HP, and they told me to do what I had done already (except, they also wanted me to recover the laptop to factory state, I didn’t want to do that), and said that if the problem persisted after trying those steps, to phone HP Technical Support and explain the problem to them. I decided to try Live Chat first. I explained the problem, and what I did to troubleshoot and attempt to fix it. They were ready to setup the warranty service, but then they realize that the model in question was a Canadian model, and that I would have to phone HP Technical Support.
So, yesterday I phoned them up, and got through to somebody in about 5 minutes. I explained the problem to the guy who answered (who actually spoke English!!!) and what I did to troubleshoot it and attempt to fix it. He had me hard reset the notebook, which didn’t fix it. So, he had me plug an Ethernet cable into the notebook, to check if that worked (which I had done when the problem started, but forgot to mention it to the guy). Then, he had me power cycle my Internet Modem (apparently, I also forgot to mention that the problem wasn’t with my Wireless Network, as my notebook connects to it fine). Then, he put me on hold for 5 minutes, and came back on the phone and told me that it’ll need to be sent into HP for warranty service. He explained to me that HP will send me a box through FedEx, which contains instructions, and that I should pack the notebook into the box (duh), and either get FedEx to pick it up, or to drop it off to FedEx. He said the box should arrive on Saturday (tomorrow), and that it usually takes 7-10 business days for you to get your notebook back (article on HP’s site says 10-14…). But, since Christmas is coming up soon, it might take longer. And… well, that was it, the warranty service was arranged, and all I need to do is put it in the box, and hand it over to FedEx. Pretty simple.
I was quite surprised when I received an email regarding the exact same issue today, actually.

What to do when Dell Latitude D620 Battery Won
If your computer runs normally on the AC adapter, but the dell latitude d620 battery won't charge, please try the following troubleshooting steps:
1. Check the Laptop Battery and Connections:
A. Remove the dell d620 battery from the system.
B. Look at the connectors in the bay and on the latitude d620 battery for signs of physical damage.
C. Check the dell laptop battery charge by pressing the status button or image on the battery near the LED's.
Note: The lights indicate the current amount of charge on the dell latitude d620 battery. If all the LED's come on when you press the button, the battery is fully charged. If fewer lights are lit, then the battery is partially charged. If any lights flash, or blink, there could be a problem with the battery.
D. Consult the Tell Me How guide for more information on laptop battery LED's:
E. Reinsert the battery; push until it locks into place and the latch snaps back to the locked position.
2. Swap Bays or Try A Second Computer:
o Some systems can run with the battery in either bay. Try swapping bays if you have one of these systems.
o If you have access to a second computer like your own, try to charge your battery in that system.
3. Flash the BIOS:
Flashing the BIOS can correct many hardware issues.
4. Run the Recalibration Utility if Your System has One:
This utility runs the notebook battery all the way down and then recharges it completely. The process takes several hours so it is best to run it overnight. Use only the recalibration program specified for your system. Using any other program could void your warranty!
o Latitude LM, Inspiron 3000 and Inspiron 3200 systems use this recalibration program:
o Inspiron 5000, Inspiron 7000, and Inspiron 7500 systems use this program:
o Latitude LS, Latitude L400, Latitude X200, and Inspiron 2100 enable a recalibration option on the Power page of the BIOS Setup Program:
