Digital Camer Battery Tips ( 2 )

Are you always running out of battery power just before you take that perfect picture with your digital camera? Here are some tips to conserve your digital camera batteries when you are out "snapping away".

1) Turn off your digital camera when not in use. If you are in a situation where you must snap pictures quickly, this may not apply as turning digital cameras on and off take a few seconds, and may cause you to miss a picture-taking opportunity. However, if you are taking a leisurely stroll and can afford a couple of seconds before snapping a still subject, by all means, conserve your digital camera's energy!

2) Many digital cameras have a regular viewfinder and an LCD viewfinder. While the digital LCD viewfinder has its benefits, it can drain battery power. Turn it off when applicable and use your regular viewfinder for taking pictures.

3) Don't stop after taking every photo and look at the picture in your digital camera's playback mode. Granted, you sometimes need to look at photos immediately after shooting them in order to make sure your exposure is correct, the lighting is ok, etc., but doing this does use up your digital camera's battery power.

4) If you are using MicroDrive media, be forewarned that these miniature hard drives may take up quite more power than Compact Flash cards. Use these tips and you'll save some digital camera battery power for when you want to take that perfect picture. But, of course, the best tip to make sure that you don't run out of power is . . . take some extra charged batteries ( such as lithium ion bp-511 battery ) with you on trips!

Digital Camera Battery Tips ( 1 )

If it is raining, or if you are near an area of running water such as a waterfall, be extremely careful when changing out your digital camera battery (such as np20 digital camera batteries ) or camcorder batteries. Get a safe distance away from the water or water vapor before you do so. Water can corrode your battery or batteries, possibly causing leakage, and this can damage your digital camera as well if you insert the wet batteries.

Canon Powershot S30

Battery pack for canon powershot s30 digital camera - canon nb-2lh battery for canon powershot s30 - 800mAh Lithium ion NB2LH 25% Off

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The PowerShot S30 is Canon's compact 3.2-megapixel digital camera based on the PowerShot S40 feature set and housed in a highly durable and pocket sized metal alloy body. The S30 has many features in common with the S40 including a sharp 3x zoom lens (35-105mm in 35mm format), a 1.8-inch color LCD viewfinder/monitor, a high-speed plug-and-play USB interface, direct print capabilities with the Canon S820D printer, compatibility with Type I and II CompactFlash memory cards, including IBM's Microdrives.
The 3.2 megapixel CCD sensor produces full-color, high-resolution images up to 2048 x 1536 pixels with additional settings for 1600 x 1200, 1024 x 768 and 640 x 480. The normal continuous shooting mode captures images at 1.5 frames per second for up to 9 frames in Large/Fine mode. The new High-Speed Continuous mode captures at 3 frames per second for up to 5 frames in Large/Fine mode. The Movie mode has been improved to provide not just one but two resolution modes with sound: QVGA (320x240), and Q2VGA (160x120). The maximum recording duration is 30 seconds in QVGA and two full minutes with Q2VGA.
For maximum flexibility, the Canon PowerShot S30 provides users with a selection of image quality settings including 3 JPEG compression modes (Superfine, Fine and Normal) at any resolution. It also features Canon's exclusive RAW mode for maximum control over image attributes such as white balance, contrast, sharpness, saturation and bit depth without image-degrading artifacts. By combining the RAW file capabilities with its optional ISO 50 sensitivity setting, users can achieve higher image quality than any competitive model on the market today.
The S30 provides a wide range of exposure modes between its Image Zone and the Creative Zone. Image Zone modes are fully automatic, and intended to optimize camera settings according to the scene. Selections include Full Auto, Pan Focus, Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Color Effect, Stitch Assist, and Movie. The Color Effect mode is new, and allows users to choose between Vivid, Neutral, Sepia or Black and White. Creative Zone modes offer more control and include Program AE, Shutter-priority, Aperture-priority and Manual. Program AE has been improved with the addition of Program Shift.
PowerShot S30 Features:
3.2-megapixel CCD with RGB primary color filters
Image sizes of 2048x1536, 1600x1200, 1024x768 and 640x480

Image Management Software
The Canon PowerShot S40 and S30 are among the first Canon digital cameras to be shipped with full support for the new Microsoft Windows XP operating system. The Windows XP logo on the package indicates that the bundled driver software has passed Microsoft's stringent WHQL (Windows Hardware Qualification Lab) compatibility requirements.
Other bundled software includes ArcSoft's Camera Suite for still image and movie editing, as well as Canon's own ZoomBrowser EX 3.1 (for PC) and ImageBrowser 2.1 (for Mac); PhotoRecord 1.4 (Windows only); PhotoStitch 3.1.4 (Windows) and PhotoStitch 3.1.2 (Mac) and RAW Image Converter 1.2. RemoteCapture 2.1 enables a USB-connected PowerShot S40 or S30 camera to be controlled by a compatible personal computer. Many camera settings such as focal length, resolution, compression, flash mode, etc., can be adjusted and images can be recorded directly to the PC.
In addition to all of these software applications, the S40/S30 is supplied with plug-in modules and TWAIN drivers as well as a WIA driver for Windows XP/Me and a USB Mounter for Mac OS 9.0 and 9.1. The WIA driver and USB mounter allow a compatible PC to mount the camera as a hard drive on the desktop and display thumbnails to facilitate simplified image data transfers.

Canon ZR-80 MiniDV OverView

Buy canon zr-80 camcorder battery pack - Lithium ion ZR-80 battery [ 3000mAh BP 522 / 1600mAh BP511 battery ]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The ZR80 is a basic point and shoot MiniDV camcorder without the benefit of an SD card for stills, a feature that appears in both the ZR85 and the ZR90. Canon separates itself from the pack of manufactures with 65 years of acclaim in the optics industry. The ZR80 has the solid appearance of a well designed piece of machinery, and the camcorder feels comfortable in hand.
The new ZR line is 18% smaller than models featured in last years ZR line. A slew of external function buttons for manual control, digital effects, and VCR playback are organized well on the housing. One drawback is the depressible jog dial that controls these features, as placement and size might trouble users.
Picture & Manual ControlAutomatic ControlThe ZR80 is a solid performer when it comes to both manual and automatic control. The DigicDV processor has the power to control automation, specifically changes in focal points, zoom, and lighting environments in near seamless fashion under well lit conditions.
Overall Manual ControlThe Canon ZR series continue to offer users a significant amount manual control over picture quality. The ZR80 covers nearly all the bases with manual control over focus, exposure, shutter speed and white balance. Missing from the list are gain control, and audio controls. The dial which controls the manual functionsis too small and awkwardly placed to make the most of the ample manual options.
Zoom The Canon ZR80 offers an impressive 18x optical zoom. The optical zoom has been a standout feature in the ZR line for several years. The power of an 18x optical zoom combined with 65 years of lens excellence sets the ZR80 apart from camcorders designed by other manufactures. The zoom is controlled with a redesigned but slightly awkward looking raise toggle switch. The zoom control accurately designates the desired speed of the zoom, unfortunately, it seemed as there were only two zoom speeds.
FocusThe focus control on the ZR80 leaves something to be desired. While the ease of access to engage manual focus is outstanding, the absence of a focus ring is disappointing. A button on the left side of the ZR80 puts the camcorder in manual focus mode, but focal adjustments are made with the depressible jog dial.
Exposure (Aperture)The ZR80 has manual exposure control, AE shift, the feature is activated and controlled in the same fashion as manual focus. There are fifteen steps of exposure displayed in number format in either the LCD or the viewfinder.
Shutter Speed Users can set the shutter speed through the LCD menu on ZR80. The steps of speed escalate incrementally - 1/60, 1/100, 1/250, 1/500, 1/1000, to 1/2000th of a second.
White BalanceAs with most consumer point and shoot camcorders, the ZR80 has the standard white balance settings. Choosing between auto, manual, indoor or outdoor is achieved within the LCD menu.
GainThe Canon ZR80 offers no manual gain control.

A road-ready digital camera

A road-ready digital camera
Tips on buying and accessorizing

As vacation season approaches, with its plethora of photographic opportunities, it's time to think about the travelworthiness of your digital camera. Here's advice to help you make the most of your camera when you're away:

Bring extra digital camera batteries. A camera that runs out of juice when you're miles from a store or power outlet ranks high on the list of photographic frustrations. If your camera accepts standard AA batteries, pack two sets and, if necessary, a charger. If your camera uses only a proprietary battery, consider buying a second one ( such as replacement np20 battery )to take along. Keep it charged so it's ready should the primary battery give out. The $20 to $50 cost will be well spent if it allows you to snap an unforgettable sunset that you'd otherwise have missed.

Parting tip: Don't forget to pack the charger, and to plug it in every night. If you're traveling abroad, make sure your charger is compatible with local outlets. If not, you'll need an adapter and, possibly, a converter.

Plan photo storage. A full memory card is the digital-camera counterpart to running out of film. Make sure your card (or cards) have sufficient capacity, especially if you haven't brought along a laptop onto which you can download images. For most consumers, a 1 GB --good for hundreds of shots from a 5 MP camera at full resolution and maximum quality--should be plenty. Card prices have dropped of late; you can now buy a 1 GB card for $50 or so; 512 MB cards run $30 or less. (See our guide to buying extra storage for your camera, available to ConsumerReports.org subscribers). If you're buying a new camera, the memory provided with it is likely too small to meet your needs. Buy at least one additional card.

Parting tip: Before heading out, make sure you transfer the shots from your last ski trip to your computer and purge them from the card, so you start out fresh.

Pack the video cable. You can share your photos with friends and family by using your camera's video-output jack to display them on the nearest available TV set. Most cameras even let you set up a slide show, so you can kick back while everyone savors the day's sights.

Consider using photofinishers as you go. If getting home from vacation typically triggers a printing marathon on the home inkjet, consider using in-store photofinishers along the way, thus giving you the option to enjoy and share your shots as you go, typically with an hour or less waiting time. As our overview on these services shows, even the best are less consistent in photo quality than the best inkjets or online photofinishers, so you might want to reprint your most prized shots at home.

Consider buying a snapshot printer. These pint-sized printers--often smaller than a few DVD-movie cases stacked atop each other--are small enough to take along on vacation and provide a great way to share shots with friends and family away from home. Some can even run on rechargeable batteries. Typical prices run from $80 to $200. They generally print only 4x6-inch photos, though a few models can also produce 5x7-inch prints or 4x12-inch panoramas.

They've become more numerous in recent years, and printing costs have dropped. Most snapshot printers now have per-photo costs of about 25 to 40 cents, comparable to full-sized inkjets. See our Ratings report (available to subscribers) on these printers.

Parting tip: Stock up on paper and ink for your snapshot printer--they're typically sold bundled in a package--before you go, since stores that stock them may be scarce where you go.

Another option if you'll have access to a computer when you travel is to upload your photos to a photosharing or photofinishing Web site. You can even order shots that will be ready for you when you get home, or have prints sent ahead to a store location at the next stop on your itinerary where you can pick them up.

Parting tip: Research and set up your account with the online site before you leave home, so as to minimize hassle on the road.

Time to get a new camera? A vacation can be a catalyst--or excuse--to get a new camera. As our latest camera overview details, there's now a wider selection of subcompact cameras that are perfect for packing along for the day, along with a selection of innovative models, including those that are waterproof (the report is available to subscribers). For more general advice on your camera choices, see our free online Decision Guide.

Parting tip: Start your research for a new camera at least a week before you go, so you have time to take advantage of often-lower online prices--and to familiarize yourself with your new camera before you face that perfect sunset.

Long Exposures Require More Battery Power

Long Exposures Require More Battery Power
SUMMARY: If you need to take photos requiring long exposures, expect your
digital camera batteries to drain quicker.

Here's another common sense tip - if you plan on taking digital photos requiring long exposures of several seconds or more, expect your batteries ( such as
casio exilim np-20 battery ) to drain faster, so make sure to bring extra. When might you take longer exposures? Possibilities include:

* Night photos, especially city photos where you're trying to capture the trails of automobile lights* Astronomy photos such as those involving star trails
* Waterfalls
* Fireworks
* Museums or other buildings with low amounts of light

Acer Battery Aspire 5050 Battery

According to Acer’s website the Aspire 5050 is targeted at entertainment enthusiasts who want reliability and performance. With a display size of 14.1” and weighing about 5.28 lbs, the notebook borders on the thin and light category with price points of budget laptops. The 5050 model line can be equipped with AMD’s Turion MK-36 or TL-50 processors, 512MB to 2 GB of ram and hard drives ranging from 80-120 GB. Styling and components are very similar to the Acer Aspire 5102WLMi

Aspire 5050 battery review :The acer aspire 5050 battery is a 6-cell, 44.6 W, 4000mAh unit, rated to last 2.5 hours (150 minutes). It is a ‘slim-line’ style battery that is flush with the notebook when inserted. Real life usage has been a bit disappointing, as I have typically only gotten 2 hours out of the aspire 5050 battery, even when I have disabled the LAN, Cardbus, modem and forced the CPUs to run at 800Mhz.

Problem With Acer Travelmate 2300

Problem:
The problem with my Acer Travelmate: when the travelmate 2300 battery ( lcbtp03003 ) is connected(with or without AC power on), the laptop freezes on the login screen (I use Windows XP Pro SP3).The keys are useless, the mouse or touchpad also, ant every button on the machine is dead - even the power-button!
On AC power only, without the laptop battery connected, the laptop works just fine. When I try to connect the acer travelmate 2300 battery after the OS started, the CPU soon goes at 100% and stops every system.
The machine works fine in Safe Mode, though, with battery... I tried system restore, but it didn't help.
Does anybody have an idea what might be wrong?

Resolution:
There are probably some corrupt files on the harddrive or there is damage on the hard drive. I would suggest to try using the windows setup cd or sony recovery cd to restore the system back to normal, if the problem is not solved by that then you most likely have a hardware problem which is most likely in the harddrive, might have to replace it, they don't cost much.

if you press f8 in start up to get the advanced startup menu, select safe mode.

start in safe mode and login

then

press start -> now run -> type in Cmd -> Type in the shell window -> chkdsk /F /X /R C:
if asked select Y to perform the operation on next start up.

see if the problem is solved.

Secure Digital (SD) is a non-volatile memory card format developed by Matsushita, SanDisk, and Toshiba for use in portable devices. Today it is widely used in digital cameras, handheld computers, PDAs, mobile phones, GPS receivers, and video game consoles. Standard SD card capacities range from 4 MB to 8 GB, and for high capacity SDHC cards from 4 GB to 64 GB as of 2008.
The format has proven to be very popular. However, a change in the format, while allowing capacities greater than 4 GB (SDHC), has created compatibility issues with older devices which cannot read the new format. Since SDHC format cards have the same physical shape and form factor as the older format, this has caused considerable confusion for consumers.[2][3] SDHC cards require an SDHC capable device firmware, generally not found with older devices.

Battery charging light is on even when power adapter is unplugged and laptop is stitched off

Battery charging light is on even when power adapter is unplugged and laptop is stitched off

I have a Thinkpad T41. Yellow light for t41 battery charging does not go even after switching the laptop off and power jack is disconnected. Battery does not charge at all with power source connected. Can you please help?
First of all, try reconnection the laptop battery if you haven’t done it already. The battery plugs directly into the connector attached to the motherboard. If the thinkpad t41 battery charging light stay on even when the power adapter is unplugged and the laptop is switched off, it’s either bad battery or something is wrong with the motherboard. The only way to find the culprit is testing the laptop with another known good battery. Also, you can try this. Remove the battery and plug in the power adapter. If the battery charging LED lights up even when the battery is removed, most likely you have a problem with the motherboard.

Can I add internal Bluetooth card to a Dell Studio 1535 laptop?
Just purchased a Dell Studio 1535 (from Staples) and wanted to add Bluetooth receiver to it. Since this was an in-store purchase, I was not able to select this. So, long of the short of it, can I add the Bluetooth module to the new computer? I am also planning on adding the backlit keyboard, but that looks pretty straight forward.
It depends on the configuration of your laptop. I found this information in the service manual for Dell Studio 1535/1536 in the “Wireless Mini-Card” category.Quote from the manual: Your computer supports three Mini-Card slots:* Two Full Mini-Card slots – for WWAN, WPAN, UWB, Bluetooth* One Half Mini-Card slot – for WLANDepending on the configuration of your system, one or more of the Mini-Cards might not be present. Apparently, in order to find out if your laptop has this slot you’ll have to remove the base cover.

http://www.asklaptopfreak.com/laptop-notebook-help/2008/08/04/internal-bluetooth-card-to-dell-studio-1535-laptop/

If you find the slot, you’ll have to use Dell Wireless 370 Bluetooth Minicard. I think that’s the right card because it’s mentioned in the list of applications available for downloads for Dell Studio 1535 laptop.

Compaq Presario R3000 Notebook Reviews

Highs: Internal flash card reader; sleek, durable casing; good configuration options.

Lows: Card reader lacking Compact Flash; no expandibility options for extra battery, hard drive or floppy drive; weighs over eight pounds.

Summary
Compaq's R3000 line of Pentium 4 notebooks is a solid performer with good looks and good features. While lacking some of the bells and whistles of other “multimedia friendly” competitors, its minimalist styling is both sleek and functional.

Backed by Compaq's one-year limited hardware warranty, the R3000 series offers a host of configuration options and add-ons. With integrated ATI Radeon 9000 graphics and integrated Broadcom 54G wireless, the R3000 is well-suited for the mobile professional or student who doesn't mind lugging around eight pounds, and the casual gamer who doesn't need the highest settings in the latest games. Its powerful JBL Pro speakers, DVD and CDR/W combo drive and 15.4-inch screen make this an excellent choice for multimedia use as well.

At over eight pounds it certainly isn't the most portable laptop available, but the weight compares favorably to competing products. If you're looking for a sturdy laptop that is somewhere between ultra-portable and a desktop replacement, Compaq's R3000 line, while not being flashy or innovative, is a good choice.

How to Buy a Digital Camera

Are you buying your first digital camera? Well, you must be confused by the bewildering range of models out there. How do you know which model will suit your needs? To make things worse, digital cameras do not come cheap. Choosing a bad camera will easily cost you a few hundred dollars.

In fact, buying a digital camera need not be a difficult task. I'll highlight the key considerations you need to think through before making that purchase decision. Always, always remember to consider these factors when buying a digital camera:

Battery Life
Number of Megapixels
Zoom Lens
Exposure Control
User Controls

Battery Life
This has got to be one of the most overlooked features in digital cameras. I know many people who go for the latest and greatest digital cameras which are short in the battery life department. If you want to take good photos, your camera needs to powered for extended periods of time. I've found that cost and battery life don't go together - many cheap cameras have good battery life, while some high-end models drain your battery really fast. Make sure you choose a camera that has good digital camera battery life.

Number of Megapixels
The megapixel rating of a digital camera determines how much fine detail you can capture in your shots. Typically, the number of megapixels can range around from 2 megapixels to 8 megapixels. How do you decide how many megapixels you need? As a rule of thumb, if you're only interested in taking small snapshots to send via email or for posting on the Web, you won't need more than 2-megapixels. If you want large print outs of your gorgeous photographs, then you'll probably want to get 5-megapixel cameras and above.

Zoom Lens
You'll definitely want a camera with decent optical zoom. Now the keyword here is optical zoom (as opposed to digital zoom). Optical zoom physically moves the camera lenses to zoom in on a subject. Digital zoom, however, digitally averages and magnifies the image within the camera's microchip - resulting in poor picture quality. Many manufacturers' advertisements talk about digital zoom instead of optical zoom - so do be careful when choosing. I'd recommend getting at least 3x optical zoom in any camera you buy.

Exposure Control
The ability to control exposure settings such as shutter speed and lens opening is critical to professional photographers. Cheaper digital cameras only allow you to shoot photos in automatic mode - just press the shutter release and voila, your picture is taken. More advanced users prefer to tweak the shutter speed and aperture to capture fast moving objects or blur the image background. Choose a camera with good exposure control if you foresee yourself taking on photography as a serious hobby.

User Controls
If you are getting a point-and-shoot camera, make sure you find one that's easy to use. User controls to set resolution, macro mode, flash and exposure should be within easy reach. Of course, if you're a serious photography buff who wants to take the time to tweak all sorts of manual settings, then this many not be so critical. I prefer to try out the camera first in the store - play with the controls and get comfortable with them. Only then will you know whether it's comfortable enough for you.

Conclusion
Well, I do hope this article has helped you understand what factors to consider when buying a digital camera. A general piece of advice I can give is - if you're a total newbie, don't go for the latest digital SLR. It may be tempting to get that Nikon D70 right from the start, but I'd reckon its much better to start off with a cheaper camera first. Learn, experiment and build up your digital photography skills. Once you're more skilled, then proceed to upgrade to a better camera. Good luck and happy shopping!

Extending battery life on the Dell XPS M1210

Introduction
I own a Dell XPS M1210. I bought it because it was powerful and small and kinda lightweight. I didn't buy it because I wanted to sit on an aeroplane and work.
Nonetheless, it'd be nice to get a bit more battery life out of it. There are a lot of reviews out there raving about the xps m1210 battery life, but that's the review models sing the 9-cell battery. It's an 80 watt-hour pack that sticks an inch out the back of the machine, ruining advantage number two: small size. So I bought the 53Whr 6-cell battery and only get two and a half hours of battery life. This laptop is a power hog.
For comparison, my previous laptop (a Dell Inspiron 4100) used a 59Whr pack and got four hours of life. You could remove the CD-ROM, put two battery packs in there, and run all day without ever plugging in. That was a mobile laptop, apart from the fact that it weighed 3kg in that configuration.
Just to compare, the old laptop (almost five years old!) sucked down 15W on average. The new laptop uses 21W. And it's using "the latest in power management technology"!
Obviously, the new one blows away the old one on performance. But for a lot of what I do - writing, coding, emailing, browsing the web - the old CPU was just fine. The main reason I upgraded in the first place was that the old laptop didn't have enough RAM for what I wanted, not that the CPU was too slow!
Improving power consumption has more benefits than just extending the dell xps m1210 battery life; the machine will run quieter (lower fan levels) and cooler (improved comfort). Supposedly it might extend its lifetime as well, although I can't see myself using it past the end of the three-year warranty anyway.
Taking measurements
I'd like to know what configuration changes will reduce power consumption and hence improve laptop battery life. Conveniently, modern batteries will also report the amount of energy being drawn from them.
Monitoring the battery discharge rate with RightMark CPU Clock Utility
I found a nice utility called RightMark CPU Clock Utility. Amongst other useful features - which I'll get to - it'll report the discharge rate of the battery. Thus, we can see exactly what helps, what doesn't, and how much of a gain we've made with each adjustment.
The best way to do this would be to run the system from a bench power supply and measure the current consumption there. I don't have a sufficiently powerful bench power supply lying around, nor do I want to destroy one of my Dell power supplies, so software-based measurement will have to do. I'm not so interested in exactly how much power each device consumes - more whether it's using power at all.
Things to adjust
CPU clock and voltage
The most obvious place to start is to tweak the CPU to use less power. For a while, CPUs have been able to adjust their clock rate on-the-fly, and most (including the Core 2 Duo in the M1210) let you reduce their voltage at the lower clock speeds, further improving battery life.
See the screenshots for the settings that I chose. I only use two different CPU states: 1GHz/0.95V and 2GHz/1.212V. If it's running on battery, I force the slower speed. If it's running from the AC adapter, I force the higher speed. You might like to set up more states, such as "sitting on the couch with the AC adapter" where you want it to run cool but ramp up if you need the performance. Remember to click the 'Battery' tab at the top when you're setting up your Power Saving profile!
RMClock Settings (1)RMClock Settings (2)RMClock Settings (3)
You can also use the throttle settings to reduce the on-battery power even more (down to 300MHz) but I found performance to be unbearably slow. It also didn't save much power.
There's also an RMClock registry setting that will enable even more multiplier and VID options - you might be able to reduce the voltage below Intel's recommended levels and hence improve power economy even more. Conversely, if you can force a higher multiplier (which you probably can't, given it's an Intel chip) you can improve performance (overclock). Of course, you're risking system stability, and I find the settings here are already close to optimal for power usage. Take a look at RMClock_Tweaks.reg in the RMClock directory.
In general, you'll want to keep the CPU utilization as low as possible. No video encoding or games. Especially not games; the video card chews through power like crazy. Modern CPUs use a lot less power when they're sitting idle. RMClock has options that will let you put a CPU usage monitor on your task tray if you need it.
Interestingly, even at 100% utilization/1GHz/0.95V, the CPU doesn't suck up a lot of power. You definitely don't want to run it flat out, but it's not that painful. It'll depend on what you're using the machine for at the time.
Once you've set up RMClock - and you're confident that it's stable - you need to save the settings by exiting the RMClock program (right-click on the sprocket tray icon and choose Exit RMClock Utility). It won't save your settings automatically in case you manage to make your machine unbootable.
Video card (NVIDIA GeForce Go 7400)
The NVIDIA control panel has a PowerMizer setting that lets you set performance levels on battery and AC power. Again, maximum performance on AC, maximum power savings for battery.
NVIDIA PowerMizer settings
If you want to fiddle around, install the CoolBits registry hack. This will let you adjust the GPU and memory clock speeds by hand. Reducing these to the minimum seems to give a slight reduction in power consumption. Certain versions of the driver will perform this for you automatically - they'll reduce the clock speeds when you're on battery and increase them again on AC.
NVIDIA CoolBits Settings
Screen brightness
Reducing the screen brightness can save you a few watts. I run at the default settings, though. With normal indoor lighting, the lower settings are too dark to actually see anything.
Of course, if you're in a darkened room, you can run lower brightness without hurting your eyes. You won't save the planet, but you might be able to sit on the couch for a bit longer without getting up.
Disabling devices
The main idea here is if you're not using it, turn it off. This includes every device in the system - the peripherals, the fans and as much as possible, the CPUs. Obviously, your exact usage scenario is going to affect this - I always use my WiFi at home, but if I was getting on a plane, disabling it would be sensible (and required).
Wireless
I suppose you could disable WiFi, since it's trendy to do so. You've got a switch for it. I usually end up using my WiFi while I'm on battery. There's an option in the BIOS to disable Bluetooth with the switch; I guess you could do the same thing with Device Manager too. The same would apply if you're lucky enough to have an EVDO card.
Logitech USB Camera: 600-2000mW
The webcam is a bit odd for power usage. What I found - and your results may vary - is that it won't draw any significant power if you don't use it. If you use it, it'll draw about 2W. If you then turn it off, it doesn't seem to entirely 'turn off'; it keeps drawing about 600mW. Explicitly disabling it in Device Manager seems to turn it off properly.
Webcam on a notebook? I've got work to do...
I don't use it much, so I just disable it all of the time. It's in Device Manager->Universal Serial Bus Controllers->Logitech USB Camera (Dell Notebooks). Right-click and hit Disable. If you want it back, right-click and hit Enable. No reboot is necessary. Most of the devices that need to be explicitly disabled will work this way.
Unplug your Ethernet if you're not using it? Does it make much difference? (See, I told you this was a post-in-progress. I'm still sketching notes for myself!)
Disable the modem in the BIOS. There might be other peripherals you can disable in the BIOS if you're not using them.
Theoretically, you can tell the hard drive to spin down after a certain timeout. I've never ever seen that timeout expire on Windows XP; it seems to access the disk constantly. So that doesn't help so much. I don't know how much more power the 7200rpm drive uses over the 5400rpm.
Disable USB host controllers in Device Manager. So long as you don't disable the USB2 host controller, all of your ports will still work, but only in USB2 mode. You can leave one enabled if you connect a mouse while on battery. Each additional host controller seems to use a bit more power. You can disable the USB2 controller for even more power savings.
This makes me wonder what temperature is reported as the CPU temperature. Turning off all of these peripherals does significantly reduce the reported temperature, so maybe they're all sharing a heatsink inside the laptop. Or that temperature which is being reported is actually a system temperature of sorts.
It'd be nice to have a program which disabled all of these peripherals automatically when you went on battery and then turned them on again when you plugged into AC.
You could unplug the DVD drive for a 200g weight saving and probably negligible power saving. Haven't tried this yet. There's a screw on the bottom of the case that you need to undo first.
You could disable one of the CPU cores entirely. You can definitely do this in the BIOS. Don't know if Device Manager will allow it. Theoretically you can get better power efficiency from a single high-speed core versus two low-speed cores (less work being done sharing resources on the cores) though I wouldn't stake my reputation on it. But then, performance isn't my priority in this anyway.
The CPU fan and system fan might use a good chunk of power, too. By changing the fan thresholds in i8kfangui you could make the fans come on later, saving a bit of power at the expense of getting your lap hot. I've found the CPU fan to be remarkable ineffective, even at full power. The best thing I've found for long-term use (if you don't want the automatic thermal throttling to kick in) is to keep the laptop elevated off the desk. It still throttles occasionally. It doesn't help that it's summer in Sydney right now and ambient temperatures of 30 degrees Celcius are common.
Running efficient software
I tried booting Damn Small Linux off a USB drive; the theory was that I could run it entirely from a RAM disk and then save files to an SD card. This would let me turn off the hard drive altogether and drop to near-zero CPU utilization at the same time. Unfortunately, it didn't make much difference at all to power use. I also couldn't explicitly disable devices like in Windows, so it was worse off overall. It was extremely responsive, though. No waiting for anything. Ever. So it might be a gain for productivity in certain situations - but a panacea for power consumption, it is not.
Conclusion
Before tweaks - everything at its default settings - the machine draws xxxxxmW when idle, giving a predicted battery life of y.yy hours.
After all of the tweaks, it's using just xxxxxmW for a y.yy hour battery life.
